We were lucky enough to be in the invite list for the inaugural #WeHeartNTfoodies event hosted by Penny & Brett at the Hotel Darwin.
Our forward thinking hosts invited a bunch of Darwin foodies, social media gurus and bloggers to the launch of their new menu and show-off the ‘behind the scenes’ renovations. What a fun night and what a fun group of people!
How lucky are we!
Dress code was ‘Territory Rig’ which, for those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s about poshing it up a bit, wearing gorgeous heels and putting on a bit of lippy! Nice! Yes, we all scrubbed up well, if I do say so myself! Must remember to do some selfies next time!
Hotel Darwin, once the grand duchess of Darwin and affectionately known as ‘Darwin Raffles’ in her heyday, is now known as one of Darwins’ most popular places to catch up with friends.
A glass of wine or beer was offered at the door so we set about introducing ourselves. After two glasses, we were all firm friends! We were very impressed with the wines on offer. The bubbles was very refreshing and perfect for me after a hard day at work while Trevor enjoyed the distinguished ‘Fat Bastard’ Pinot Noir.
Share-platters are perfect for me as I often find it difficult to make a decision because everything looks great!
Settling into our table it was an opportunity to get to know everyone, catch up with old friends, meet new friends and take our first look at the exciting new menu.
What a great idea to serve share-platters! An opportunity to taste everything! Chilli Squid, Bruschetta, Crayfish Salad and Oysters both Natural and Kilpatrick – perfect sampling of their starters. De-licious!
Darwin Foodies on Tour
Penny & Brett topped up our glasses and took us on a tour of the establishment! Penny and Brett took over the management of Hotel Darwin in September last year and have been busy making changes! The main bar and restaurant area is has immediate warmth to it. Open and spacious, great atmosphere and rich dark timber feel to it. Great news are the cosy nooks to enjoy a drink, something to eat and enjoy a quiet conversation with friends.
We headed into the Sports Bar where a ‘pool competition’ was in full swing. Competition nights are held regularly so if you love pool, it’s the place to go. It was good to see that the Hotel Darwin has a clear sports focus and has set up the rooms so that there is a screen with a sporting event every way you turn.
Pokies have been set up in the ‘pokie room’ which is alongside the Sports Bar so those who want to slip away for a flutter can enjoy their space and a little privacy.
One of the most surprising areas was the ‘Beer Garden’ – a great open air space which will be perfect in the Dry Season, fitted out with a BBQ kitchen and outdoor stage areas (which I suspect may be a karaoke space)? It’s a great casual space and a great place for families to hang out.
Single plate options followed with a choice of Wild-Caught Grilled or Battered Local Barramundi, Scotch Fillet and a Vegetarian Mixed Grill accompanied with a beautiful Pear, Rocket and Goats Cheese Salad and a Tasty Pumpkin Salad. Barra is often served across the Top-End but not all is ‘Wild-Caught’ so we were really pleased to see this noted on the menu. Great also to see the selection of original salads as accompaniments. The main share-platter followed our return to the table with a delicious serve of NT Mudcrab and WA Crayfish! Divine! I must say that I’ve found it rare that crayfish is cooked perfectly, but this was and I will be returning for this dish alone!
Dessert was one of their housemade super smashing ‘Cosmopolitans’ on-tap which has become quite possibly my favourite dessert of all time!
What a great night! Great to meet up with the other Darwin media gurus and put names to familiar ‘tags’ that we’ve been interacting with each other on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and FaceBook for some time but even better to be part of this #WeHeartNTfoodies event at the Hotel Darwin!
